How to Change Careers & Figure Out Which Path to Take

Do you feel like you're stuck in a career rut?

Are you feeling dissatisfied with your current job?

If so, it might be time to consider changing careers. Figuring out which path to take can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be.

This article will discuss some tips for changing careers and deciding on a new professional path. We'll also provide advice on determining if a new profession is the right choice for you. So, if you're feeling uncertain about your professional future, read on!

Article Overview:

Why You Should Change Careers

There are likely several reasons that you might be considering a career change. Maybe you don't feel challenged in your current position. Or, you could be looking for a more creative job that allows you to use your talents differently. It's also possible that you're ready for a change and are looking for a new professional challenge.

If you feel underappreciated, underpaid, and have a burning desire to find more meaningful work, you should most certainly begin changing careers, jobs, or businesses (if you are an entrepreneur).

How The Wrong Career Affects Your Mindset

Most of us spend more time working than doing anything else in our lives, so it's essential to make sure that we enjoy our work. Otherwise, it can lead to feelings of dissatisfaction and unhappiness.

A recent study found that more than 50% of employees are unhappy with their jobs. That means that nearly half of the workforce is going to work every day feeling unfulfilled, sad, and maybe even resentful.

It's not just our mental health that suffers when we're in a career that we don't love. Our physical health can be affected as well. Job stress has been linked to various physical health problems, including stress, heart disease, gastrointestinal issues, and migraines.

So, if you're not happy with your current career, it's essential to do something about it. Otherwise, it could lead to severe consequences for your mental and physical health.

The wrong job also leads to negative thoughts and a lack of motivation, which can be detrimental to your career growth and development. When you're not motivated, it's hard to put your best foot forward and advance your career, which is necessary to achieve your full potential.

Benefits of Finding Meaningful Work

In contrast to the harmful effects of a career, you don't love, finding meaningful work can positively impact your life.

When you feel that your work is meaningful, you have a higher propensity to reach for your full professional potential, accomplish big goals, find internal satisfaction in your work itself, and earn more money, all significant wins.

3 Things To Know About Career Change & Finding Meaningful Work

We want to share a few essential things with you before you embark on your search for more meaningful work that we've found are simply not true.

1. Luck Or Chance Will Not Create Your Next Opportunity

If you rely purely on the "hope and pray" strategy for a professional change, you are in for a very tough transformation. Instead, you need to put in the work on yourself to understand your skills, strengths, and passions that align with what you want.

2. Your Mindset Is Your Greatest Obstacle

You are your greatest obstacle to a professional change. Your mindset, which is how you view yourself in your professional world, will have to change before you can fully transform into a new career.

3. Your Full Professional Potential Is Not Realized Alone

Many men talk about realizing their full potential, not just in their profession but in all areas of life. However, to realize your full potential, you'll need support from mentors and others who can help you see your blind spots and double down on your strengths and natural talents.

7-Step Guide To Changing Careers

This simple 7-step guide to changing careers will help you regardless of which stage of career change you are in, and it will also help whether you are seeking a new job or to start your own business in your 30s, 40s, or 50s.

1. Get Clear On Why You Want to Make a Professional Change

The first step is to clarify why you want to make a professional change. There are likely several reasons you want to do something new, like making more money, finding fulfillment, and becoming a more valued team member. Start by writing these down on a piece of paper and asking yourself why you want to change until you are out of answers or at least seven times. We call these the seven levels of why exercise.

Happiness comes from what we do. Fulfillment comes from why we do it. - Simon Sinek

2. Learn About Your Skills, Strengths, and Passions

After you clearly understand why you want to change, it's time to learn more about your skills, strengths, and passions. This will help you determine what type of work would best fit you. There are several ways to do this through books, personality tests, and courses. We've included some resources at the end of this article that will help you with this.

3. Create a Vision For Your Professional Future

The next step is to create a vision for your professional future. Your vision should be crystal clear so that when you read it, you can see yourself in your new workplace. This means that you should explore some really important questions like:

  • Do I want to be an entrepreneur or an employee?
  • What type of organization do I want to work for, or what type of company do I want to build?
  • How much money do I want to be earning per year?
  • What does a day in the life of my new work look and feel like?
  • What type of people do I get to work with?

Answering these questions in a clear, compelling, and written vision will help you to better understand what you want from your next career. Sometimes this is easiest done by creating a list of things you want to do, be, and have, then building a career or business vision board so you can begin to visualize your future.

4. Create a Clear Plan of Action

Once you've created a clear vision for your professional future, you will need to create a plan of action to turn your dream into a reality. This plan should include a clearly defined goal, steps you need to complete to transition, the type of research you need to do, who you need support from, and what resources you need to make the change happen.

He who fails to plan plans to fail.

- Winston Churchill

5. Level Up Your Skills

If you want to change careers, you will likely need to learn new skills. This could mean taking a course, learning on the job, or studying on your own time. How you choose to do this will depend on your learning style, what resources are available to you, and the type of professional change you are looking to make.

We have discovered one commonality about peak performers: the men who earn more money, grow larger businesses, and get promoted before others... they are consistently improving their skills.

6. Leverage The Power of Your Professional Relationships

Your professional relationships are a powerful tool to help you make a successful career change or start and grow your new business. These relationships can provide you with access to new opportunities, networking events, and mentors who can guide and support you as you transition into your new role.

Start by making a list of 10 people you know who have experience in the profession you are looking to transition into.

7. Let Purpose Fuel Your Motivation

As you embark on your new career journey, it's important to remember that your why should be bigger than just making more money, starting a new business, or getting a promotion. Your why should inspire and motivate you to take action even when things get tough. It should be a combination of your skills, strengths, and passions channeled into a cause that benefits others.
